Day 11: To BREAK or not to BREAK!


DAY 11 –6/2/2012
11-2:30pm. 

I was a little reluctant for the first day back at the workshop for the New Year, as I knew this session would involve remaking the sides of the guitar from scratch after I broke the cutaway on my first attempt at hand bending. My new sassafras pieces had arrived and to my surprise, these pieces of timber were far more beautiful than the first, I could almost say “Lucky I broke the first lot.”

Day 7: Creating the soundboard bracing

Creating bracing for the soundboard:

Today was all about creating the bracing for the soundboard. This is a detailed process, and there’s a set formula/layout to follow. Altering this formula will have a profound effect on the distribution of the sound across the soundboard, thus altering the sound/tone. Continue Reading →

Day 3: Carving Back Bracing

DAY 3 – 24/11/2011 10-1pm.

On arrival today I was to test if the glue had repaired the inch crack through my cutaway.
No.
Workshop master Chris, had hoped we might be able to salvage my broken sides, but despite after heating and wetting the wood, the slightest pressure on the wood re-cracked the cutaway. At strong as this glue is… some breaks just aren’t fixable.
I will now have to start the sides of my guitar again. But must wait a week, or 2, or 3, for the new pieces of sassafras to arrive. Fortunately there is much that can be done on the rest of the guitar in the mean time. Continue Reading →
